PROGRAM ASSOCIATE FOR AFRICA
Trickle Up is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering people living on less than a dollar a day to take the first steps out of poverty, providing them with resources to build microenterprises for a better quality of life. We provide a combination of seed capital, training, and savings support to over 10,000 very poor people and their household members each year via local partner agencies in eight countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Founded in 1979, Trickle Up has headquarters in New York City and field offices in India, Guatemala, Mali, and Uganda. In Africa, we currently work in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Uganda, and Ethiopia.
THE POSITION
Under the supervision of the Program Officer for Africa, the Program Associate will be a full participant in program design and implementation and will be responsible for the following:
Program Operations
Communicate with field offices in Mali and Uganda to coordinate fund disbursement, reporting, communication, and logistics as needed;
Translate or adapt various program documents in French and English;
Review and track budget expenses;
Provide administrative support to the Africa Program Officer; and
Manage the Africa Desk in the absence of Program Officer.
Program Monitoring
Conduct field visits to monitor program activities and provide support to field staff as needed;
Analyze program results and report impact on participants, communities and partners; and
Keep abreast of socioeconomic trends in the region and developments in microenterprise.
Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E)
Provide support to the M&E Officer and Africa Program Officer in the implementation of Poverty Assessment Tools (PATs), Outcomes Assessment (OAs), and other M&E tools as needed;
Provide support to field staff in Mali and Uganda in data entry and analysis; and
Manage the Africa program database.
External/Donor Relations
Contribute to preparation of proposals and reports for donors;
Assist with handling inquiries; and
Support Trickle Up representation at conferences, special events, and office visits.
Strategy & Planning
Provide support to field offices in development of program strategies;
Participate in strategic and operational planning processes; and
Conduct special research projects, as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
Field experience in Africa;
Fluency in written and conversational French;
Degree in international development or related field;
Demonstrated interest in microenterprise and/or economic development, poverty alleviation or sustainable livelihoods;
Strong written and oral communication skills;
Administrative experience, including multi-tasking and prioritization skills;
Excellent cross-cultural and teamwork skills; and
Ability to travel internationally about 15-20% of the time in sometimes challenging conditions.
Basic knowledge of database software is a plus.
