Felisa and her stall

Felisa Bin lives in the small village of Guaxpac, Guatemala. As a grandmother of three, Felisa has tried to make ends meet through a variety of strategies, including basket weaving, selling tortillas, and domestic labor. Despite her hard work, these activities rarely provided enough income to cover her family’s basic needs.

In an effort to earn a better living, Felisa opened a stall in her village that sells everyday items. Initially, the new stall had little success: it was underfunded, under-stocked, and underused. With the help of Trickle Up, however, Felisa gradually began to increase her inventory—attracting more customers with the quantity and quality of her goods. Today she is earning more, saving more, and is a source of stability for her whole family.

In addition to her primary income, Felisa has earned an additional 175 Quetzales ($23) in interest from her savings group. Beyond the financial gain, her savings group has helped her to build stronger communal relationships with her neighbors and a sense of camaraderie that was not there before. A more confident and assertive Felisa says, “I am no longer afraid to state my opinion at village meetings.”

Felisa has a prosperous future ahead of her. Recently, her savings group approved a loan to further expand her vending activities. She has plans to start a second activity raising chickens, which she will sell for profit once they have grown strong and healthy. Felisa’s savings group is also flourishing: this past year, the group’s size doubled from 21 to 43 people, meaning more credit will be available for members in the coming year.

“I am happy and thankful because loans from my savings group helped me to offer more products in my shop and provide medicine for my grandchildren. The group always helps me.”
